Faworki – it is traditional Polish “cookies” (French dough fingers), served on Fat Thursday. Now, Fat Thursday in Poland is the last Thursday before the Lent. Faworki are optional. Nearly the whole nation goes donuts crazy on this day (or better yet – dough nuts!). Faworki (in some regions of Poland called also “chrust” which means firewood) are not as popular as donuts, but it is worth to make some effort and enjoy the results of your work. Imagine how your guests would be surprised if you served for dessert something absolutely new.
Ingredients:
2 cups of flour
0,5 table spoon of salt
0,5 table spoon of sugar
6 egg yolks
5 table spoons of sour cream (or crème fraiche)
1 table spoon of pure spirit, or vodka, or cognac (optional)
Oil for frying
Icing sugar
Preparation:
Mix all the ingredients and knead dough till elastic. Sprinkle some flour on the table (or any other surface) cut a piece of the dough and roll it with a rolling pin till thin.
Pour oil into a pan and heat it up. Make sure you have enough oil to fry faworki and turn them in it.
Cut the rolled dough into stripes and then cut them across making each of them about 10 cm long. Cut each of them in the middle so that you can flip it. Flipped and ready faworki put into hot oil. Fry till golden on each side.
Be careful! It takes only a few seconds to fry them on each side.
Once fried, place them on a tea towel to get rid of oil.
Once cooled down, sprinkle with icing sugar.
You might want to serve them with a fruit dip and fresh fruits.
